Open enrollment is your chance to access or change health insurance plans. Missing this window could mean waiting until the next enrollment period. You can apply for financial help to reduce your health insurance costs during open enrollment.
When Is Open Enrollment for Health Insurance?
Health care open enrollment windows vary depending on the type of health insurance plan you need. Open enrollment dates are as follows:
- Health insurance marketplace open enrollment—Individuals can enroll in or change their health insurance plans annually between Nov. 1 and Dec. 15.
- Medicare open enrollment—Individuals eligible for Medicare, including those aged 65 and older, can change their Medicare plans, switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, and adjust prescription drug coverage annually from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.
- Employer-sponsored health insurance open enrollment—Dates can vary if you have health insurance through your employer. Employers typically provide employees specific dates and instructions for enrolling in or changing their health insurance plans. These dates can occur at different times of the year, often in the fall or early winter.
Check the specific open enrollment dates for the type of health insurance plan you are considering.
Missing the open enrollment period may limit your options for enrolling in or changing your health insurance coverage unless you qualify for a special enrollment period due to certain life events such as marriage, birth of a child or loss of other coverage.
What Is a Special Enrollment Period?
A special enrollment period (SEP) for health insurance is a time outside of the regular open enrollment period during which you can enroll in or make changes to your health insurance plan. If your circumstances change, such as getting married or divorced, losing health insurance coverage, or having a child, you may be able to change your health care plan, even outside of an open enrollment period.
SEPs are typically triggered by certain life events that impact your health insurance needs. These events allow you to access coverage or modify your plan outside the standard enrollment period.
Specific requirements for qualifying for a SEP are based on the type of health insurance plan and the regulations in your state or country. You may have a limited time window (usually around 60 days) to enroll in or change your health insurance plan through the SEP.
